CLARK, NANCY B., AND WILLIAM H. DANTZLER. Renal tubular transport of calcium and phosphate in snakes: role of parathyoid hormone. Am. J. Physiol. 223(6) : 1455-1464. 1972.-Excretion of calcium and phosphate was studied by clearance techniques in control and parathyroidectomized, unanesthetized water snakes of the genus Matrix. In intact animals, relative phosphate clearance (CPOq/CIn) averaged about 2.6, indicating net tubular secretion of phosphate, while relative calcium clearance (Cc&in) was about 0.1, indicating net tubular reabsorption of calcium. The calcium urine/ultrafiltrate (U/UF) ratio was less than 1.0, which is compatible with active tubular reabsorption. In parathyroidectomized animals, CP04/Cln dropped to about 0.3, indicating net reabsorption of phosphate. Since the phosphate urine/plasma (U/P) ratio was still greater than 1.0, there was no evidence of active reabsorption of phosphate. Parathyroidectomy did not alter reabsorption of calcium, with 9OY, of the filtered calcium still being reabsorbed. Administration of parathyroid extract (PTE) restored net tubular secretion of phosphate in parathyroidectomized animals and elevated phosphate secretion in control animals within 1 hr. PTE had no statistically significant effect on tubular transport of calcium in intact or parathyroidectomized animals.

Effect of Growth Hormone on Tubular Transport of Phosphate in Normal and Parathyroidectomized Dogs.

It has been demonstrated recently that human growth hormone (HGH) increases the tubular reabsorption of phosphate in man (1, 2). This effect is probably responsible for the fall in urinary excretion of phosphate and the rise in plasma level of phosphorus produced by growth hormone (GH) and may also explain the elevation of plasma phosphorus found in acromegaly. The action of GH on tubular trans...

Conditional Deletion of Fgfr1 in the Proximal and Distal Tubule Identifies Distinct Roles in Phosphate and Calcium Transport

A postnatal role of fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR1) in the kidney is suggested by its binding to α-Klotho to form an obligate receptor for the hormone fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23). FGFR1 is expressed in both the proximal and distal renal tubular segments, but its tubular specific functions are unclear. In this study, we crossed Fgfr1flox/flox mice with either gamma-glutamylt...

Factors affecting calcium metabolism in disorders of the kidney.

The ionized calcium concentration in blood is maintained within narrow limits by a complex hormonal system that includes parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D. The kidney plays a pivotal role in the physiologic action of PTH, as this peptide hormone increases tubular calcium reabsorption, decreases tubular phosphate reabsorption, and stimulates the renal 25-hydroxy-1-hydroxylase to convert 25...
